Regional biosafety workshop kicks off
9/7/2010 8:33:06 AM
A two-day regional biosafety workshop opened at the Ha Noi Daewoo Hotel today.

Participants will discuss issues concerning the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB).

The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is the first legally binding instrument to regulate the trans-boundary movement of living-modified organisms. Viet Nam has been member of the CPB since 2004.

"We are aware of potential risks caused by modern technology. The government considers biosafety importance and will promote international and regional co-operation to handle this issue," said Director General of Vietnam Environment Administration Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Cach Tuyen.

The workshop is being hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications and the Programme for Biosafety Systems.

"This [workshop] is an evidence of the international efforts made to protect human health and the environment from potential risks caused by modern biotechnology," said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuyen. – VNS
