Cold weather to stay through January
1/9/2012 10:57:16 AM
Severe cold spells will continue to hit the northern region during the first month of 2012, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. Heavy cold fronts are expected to bring chilly weather conditions to the mainland and produce strong winds and rough waters in the East Sea.
The average temperature in January is forecast to be 1-2 degrees Celsius lower than the average of previous years. Mountainous localities are urged to take the necessary measures to prevent cattle and poultry from hunger and freezing.
The Hanoi Department of Education and Training yesterday delivered an urgent notice saying kindergarten and elementary school pupils should stay at home if the temperature drops below ten degrees Celsius; and secondary school pupils should stay home if the temperature falls below 7 degrees Celsius.
Thousands of kindergarten and elementary school students in Hanoi have stayed off school because of the cold weather since early this week.
